WikiLeaks has been a disruptive force for the past 20 years, challenging the secrecy of influential institutions with an accuracy that was both feared and admired. WikiLeaks revealed the raw reality of high-level operations by making sensitive military and diplomatic documents public. Its disclosures, especially in the early 2010s, prompted both laudation and censure. One release that had a particularly significant impact was a cockpit video called “Collateral Murder.” This footage from 2007 was made public in April 2010 and showed a U.S.

Apache helicopter attack in Baghdad that killed two Reuters journalists and more than a dozen others. The soldiers opened fire on civilians and a van that was coming to assist the wounded after mistaking camera equipment for weapons. Their radio communications had an unsettlingly casual tone. The video was unvarnished, unsettling, and incredibly successful at dispelling any misconceptions about the ethics or accuracy of contemporary warfare.

Time Magazine referred to it as “a moment of unmasking,” highlighting how the video brought attention to an otherwise hidden incident on a global scale. WikiLeaks significantly increased public awareness of military errors and unreported civilian casualties through this and other disclosures, bringing about discussions that governments were unprepared for.

The war logs from Afghanistan and Iraq helped WikiLeaks broaden its purview by the summer of 2010. These collections, which included more than 90,000 and 400,000 documents, respectively, revealed a startling number of torture cases and civilian deaths that had previously been kept secret. More than 195 civilian casualties that had not been reported before were verified by the Afghan logs. Even more alarming were the Iraq files, which showed that coalition forces frequently neglected to look into abuses, such as rapes and killings by local security forces. The carefully constructed messaging from government briefings was in stark contrast to the darker reality that emerged with each page turned.

The war logs, according to Time Reports, offered remarkably clear insight into the gap between the briefing room and the battlefield. It served as a truth archive for reporters. It was an operational nightmare for governments. These publications sparked intense discussions about striking a balance between national security and transparency, particularly in light of the intensifying anti-terror operations.

The 2010 release of “Cablegate” was one of WikiLeaks’ most contentious events. This collection of more than 250,000 diplomatic cables provided an unvarnished glimpse into the perceptions of American diplomats toward their international counterparts. The discussion of Saudi, Iranian, Russian, and Chinese leaders was so direct that it hardly ever makes it into the public domain. For example, one of the cables revealed that Saudi King Abdullah had privately called on the United States to strike Iran’s nuclear program. Because of the directness of these exchanges, Cablegate was especially groundbreaking because it made international diplomacy face its own deceit head-on.

But not every revelation made by WikiLeaks was geopolitical in nature. After a devastating cyberattack in 2015, they made public more than 170,000 internal emails and 20,000 documents from Sony Pictures. Actresses like Jennifer Lawrence were paid less than their male co-stars, exposing gender pay disparities in Hollywood. Executives also made derogatory remarks about celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio and Angelina Jolie. While acknowledging the importance of these disclosures, Time Magazine questioned the morality of publishing gossip-level information about people who are not of public interest. These leaks fueled crucial discussions on inequality by humanizing institutional critique, but they also made it harder to distinguish between invasion and transparency.

The release of sensitive data by WikiLeaks, including medical records, private addresses, and the identities of vulnerable people, was one of the more concerning episodes. The Saudi files contained the names of psychiatric patients, abuse survivors, and even children who had been sexually abused. The media and human rights organizations strongly criticized these revelations. In a particularly scathing report, the Associated Press told the tales of people who were actually in danger after being exposed. Time’s commentary at the time was remarkably similar to the public outcry: WikiLeaks had failed to protect innocent lives, which was a moral transgression.

In spite of its contentious strategy, WikiLeaks did spark a larger wave of activism by whistleblowers. The platform increased the visibility of the voices behind classified truths by utilizing journalistic reach through strategic partnerships with major media outlets. It emphasized how technology, governance, and civil accountability are increasingly overlapping. Holding superpowers accountable, which had previously seemed unattainable, is now becoming a reality. Institutions were eventually compelled to reconsider the veracity of official narratives, data security, and whistleblower protections.

Julian Assange’s legal troubles became more complicated in the years that followed. Public opinion was sharply divided while he sought asylum in the Ecuadorian embassy in London. While some viewed him as a reckless narcissist, others saw him as a hero of digital liberation. Even famous people like Lady Gaga and Pamela Anderson expressed support, which fueled his divisive image even more. Assange eventually reached a plea agreement with the US government in 2024. He was freed and sent back to Australia after 14 years of court battles. The resolution raised new questions: was the messenger persecuted while the message went unanswered, or had justice been done?
